Thought I’d post a couple of my drawings with reds and greens to keep in the holiday spirit.

Peonies in the Shadows

Falling Peonies

I’m re posting a color drawing I completed a few years ago of a cluster of peonies casting shadows in the garden.  I love how the flowers get so loose just before coming apart and provide even more interesting shadow shapes.

Final Version of the Drawing of Joe and Frankie

Nearing the final stages of the mixed media drawing of our grandson Joe and his Boston Terrier Frankie.  I had originally thought it would be watercolor with colored pencil, however I found pastel provided the drama and abstractions where needed.  The pose was a difficult one and  I was very unsure of it.  However, time and the light play over the subjects led to subtle nuances which added to the story line. Plus I enjoy this tender moment in Joe’s relationship with Frankie.

Contour of Joe and Frankie

This is the contour for a drawing of our grandson Joe and his Boston Terrier Frankie.  This is the stage where I get in all of the crucial information and provides the framework for the finished gradations.  Taken into account is the light source, area of focus, and a true sense of form or what is three dimensional about my subject.

Lion of Pillsbury Hall

This is a great compelling snarling face from the walls of Pillsbury Hall on the University of Minnesota campus.  It was completed in colored pencil and pastel on Canson paper.

Triptych Demonstrating a Shift in Palette

August 5, 2015 § Leave a comment

This triptych illustrates the importance of serial imagery in telling a story.  Here the palette shifts from warm on the left to cool on the right.  Notice how each palette gives a little of itself to the contrasting one and the center piece incorporates both elements.

Garden Goddess

July 4, 2015 § 1 Comment

I’m reblogging a previous post entitled Garden Goddess as some of my settings were not intact.   Additional hue was added to a color pencil drawing to provide more differentiation between the foreground, middle ground, and the background.

Persephone IIIII

I’ve added hue to this drawing of Persephone from a series related to sculpture in architecture.  Colors and shadows are intensified to provide a greater sense of depth.
